(1.0 point) NUCLEAR FAMILY The traditional definition of a nuclear family is a family unit that includes two married parents of opposite genders and their biological or adopted children living in the same residence. However, the term “nuclear family” can mean several different things in today’s society. Understanding the classic roles in this type of family and how it is defined can help you understand the relationships in your own family, whether it’s nuclear or not. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the term “nuclear family” was first used in 1947, but the concept of a family that consists of just parents and children is much older. This basic unit of a family’s structure has existed for millennia, but it wasn’t until the 1960s and 1970s that the nuclear family became the majority situation. At that time, industrial economic booms and rising wages made it possible for young parents to afford their own homes without living with extended family members. At the same time, better healthcare contributed to the nuclear family, as elderly members became more self-sufficient and independent for decades after their children were grown. Today, the era of the nuclear family is often glamorized, complete with mom in the kitchen, dad out earning the paychecks, and the kids building a tree house or hosting a stuffed animal tea party. In reality, there is no ideal type of family, and today’s definition of a nuclear family can greatly differ from that it was a few decades ago. 1. ______ Nuclear family is a family that includes only the father, mother, and children. 2. ______ The term “nuclear family” was officially used in the 1960s. 3. ______ The development of economy contributed to the growth in the number of nuclear family. 4. ______ Nuclear family is in fact the perfect type of family. VI. Read the following passage and choose the best option A, B, C or D to answer these questions. (1.0 point) Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time. If corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learn all the other Trang 2
  3. things they learn to do without being taught – to talk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle – compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not. If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let’s end all this nonsense of grades, exams, and marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must someday learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know. 1. What is the passage mainly about? A. Children don’t have chance to learn by themselves B. Children should always be corrected. C. Children need to learn things independently. D. Children should not go to school. 2. What does the author think teachers do which they should NOT do? A. They give children correct answers. B. They allow children to mark their own work. C. They point out children’s mistakes to them. D. They encourage children to copy from one another. 3. According to the first paragraph, what basic skills do children learn to do without being taught? A. Talking, running and skiing B. Running, walking and playing C. Reading, talking and hearing D. Talking, climbing and whistling 4. The word “measure” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________. A. learn B. choose C. give up D. assess VII. Complete the second sentence so that it means the same as the sentence provided.
